Application & Admission Process

Application process

Students may request admission to any of the Interdisciplinary Studies programs after the completion of 14 semester hours of coursework and before the completion of 75 semester hours.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 graded hours at Illinois State with a cumulative ISU GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Students must submit the following documents using the following online forms and the specific format described in the links below:

  • an inquiry stating their reasons for pursuing a major or minor in Interdisciplinary Studies
  • a rationale stating the learning objectives of the proposed major or minor and how the curriculum, or plan of study, addresses those learning objectives
  • a plan of study which meets the requirements of the sequence they plan to complete
  • applicants should select an appropriate faculty advisor to assist in developing this plan of study

Applications are reviewed only once each semester and must be submitted during September or February.

Admission to the Interdisciplinary Studies Majors and Minor

After approval of the proposal (including the rationale and proposed plan of study) by the departments or schools offering the courses, the Interdisciplinary Studies Coordinator, and the Provost’s Office, the major plan of study is filed with the Office of the Registrar, Evaluations. At this point the major or minor is officially declared.

Once the plan of study is filed by the Office of the Registrar, students are expected to monitor their progress toward completion of the major (and graduation) by picking up an Academic Progress Summary in 107 Moulton Hall or by viewing the “Progress Toward My Degree” channel on the iCampus portal.
